When Your Plans Change.

Thanks for being with us as we co-host for Make A Difference Monday, a place to get intentional about starting our week focused on the positive and dream up ways we can make a difference in the world! Today's post is on change...

What happens when the future you so carefully planned out suddenly looks like nothing you had imagined?

A phone call from the doctors office with the test results that made you feel as though a thousand lifetimes had passed while you waited to for the phone to ring.

A causal conversation with someone who suggests that you should apply for that open position you've been secretly pondering but had talked yourself out of.

A spouse who comes home one day to tell you that he thinks perhaps it's time to pack up and move across country on a new adventure.

Insert any one of a million different ways life can change in the blink of an eye, for better or worse, and you are suddenly set adrift in an unknown future.
Last week, my family spent a vacation consumed by the past. And I've spent countless quiet moments since that week pondering past, present and future.

We traveled to Colorado to simultaneously celebrate and mourn the tenth anniversary (and final year) of Katie's Club in honor of our beloved Katrina, whose life forever altered the course of so many lives. We spent the week laughing and crying and feeling Big Feelings that, oftentimes, could not be put into words.

In addition, my husband and I spent time catching up with childhood best friends more than a decade after jobs and adventures moved friends across the country. We found ourselves in that strange place of reminiscing about what was, pondering what's changed and catching glimpses in our friends of the child we once knew so well combined with an adult we recognize hardly at all.

And this job of raising children, it is stretches out ahead of me forever when viewed in the moment of making dinner and bath time and herding everyone off to bed, but flashes by faster and faster as I watch birthdays roll by and as friends on the parenthood journey ahead of me remind me that childhood is gone in a blink.

The only constant in life, it seems, is change.  And when change is coming at me from too many different directions at once, I reach for my Bible.

There is comfort in knowing that God is unchanging. He is the only constant in a temporary world that never stays the same for long. His character is dependable and reliable and can be sought out in the pages of scripture time and again when life is overwhelming.

We love a God who stands outside of time, outside of chaos, outside of change. And there is peace in knowing He is the one who stays the same, no matter the chaos that swirls in my life, in our country, in this world.

Sweet Jesus, draw us near as we stand in those places of uncertainty.  Be with us as we navigate change in our lives and in the lives of those we love.  Remind us that you are our rock, our stability, our constant, no matter the circumstance. Amen.
